"A
Home Run of a Red Blend.....
.....with a label that doesn't hurt to look at - if you like
Bodacious Babes... or if you are a Motorcycle Enthusiast...
The 2008 Cycle Buff Beauty, from the Misfit Wine Company, is an exotic blend
from South Australia of 80% Malbec & 20% Shiraz - but the Bodacious babes on
the label is what draws you in looking at the wine on the shelf.
In my opinion the Cycle Buff Beauty is an awesome blend utilizing Malbec
that creates a Rich Intensity of Blackberry, Vanilla and Exotic Spices. This
wine Has Body. It Has Smoothness.
And it EASILY DRINKS $25 but is only $13+ by the case.
Does Label Art HELP in selling a wine?
I'd say so with this wine... but having had it served BLIND, I really liked
this wine... and love it for the price!
And the label writing is very creative too. On the label:
"Like a 32 inch waist in a fat man store, Misfit Wine Co. doesn’t fit in. …
The Cycle Buff Beauty, a tale of escape. How two exquisite beauties escape
the clutches of heathen hands that would have otherwise squeezed all life
from their precious bodies. This Malbec Shiraz is a tribute to those who
held onto their precious rose and escaped the clutches of those who just
don’t know."
Serve this at Barbeques all Summer Long... but don't be surprised if some
people can't get past the label art."

Now here is the consummate wine connoisseur & collector
recommending a wine at $6+ when bought by the case...... you seeing what I'm
seeing?
"On the other horizon from the Modern creations of Australia, there are
great everyday wines being produced in Southern Italy.
I've tasted a lot of inexpensive reds from Southern Italy and most of them
have an annoying cheapness to them that reminds me how inexpensive they are.
Here's a delicious 2008 Nero D'Avola from Liotro that is an Italian
drinker's version of Nero d'Avola, meaning not manipulated to have sweet
fruit for an American palate... this is classic, bone-dry, with great fruit
and a harmonious long finish... really long for a wine that's $6+ by the
case.
If you like Beaujolais, Primitivo, Negroamaro, rustic dry red wines... this
wine is for you.
The Liotro stands out for what's in the bottle and how little leaves your
wallet.
Highly Recommended Multi-Case Purchase."

"The
richly textured flavors are packed with fresh fruit, length and structure."
"Charles Back, a noted South African winemaker who specializes in Pinotage,
is behind the Fairview wines. For this 2008, Back chose bush vines from two
coastal areas: Malmesbury and Agter-Paarl. Fermented in stainless steel
tanks, the wine was aged for 10 months in French and American oak. The color
is a very deep purple-ruby and the aromas show ripe berry and spice with a
trace of smoke. The richly textured flavors are packed with fresh fruit,
length and structure. Finished at 14.65% alcohol, this is a value Pinotage
with big juicy flavors."

"And
what was wine of the night?"
"Wait - Don't hit Delete YET!
This wasn't that sugary sweet Lambrusco from Riunite...
A 30th Birthday for a really good friend last night and it was one of those
hot, 85 degree nights with 115% Humidity... just a yucky night, but good to
be outside with a little breeze.
The Big wines showed up - As they should for a 30th Birthday celebration.
Not his fault he's born in August.
Sassicaia 2007 (Amazingly ready to drink but tannic and likely going to shut
down soon to re-awake in 10 years RP95 and a few bottles in Stock - Single
Bottle: $198.09 / Mixed Case: $176.08 / Solid Case: $165.07 / $990.45)
Insignia 2004 (Wonderful - But is it really worth $150?)
Sociando Mallet 2000 (Bought on futures by a Chef/friend for $18 a bottle -
now try and find it for less than $75 - and drinking gorgeously... if Parker
tried it now he'd give it 95 Points!)
Mr. Black's Concoction Shiraz (another $35-40 Shiraz to be available in the
$18 range, email coming soon.)
And What was wine of the Night?
EVERYONE agreed it was the NV Ariola Lambrusco "Marcello"...
It was served ICE-COLD, had bubbles, a gorgeous nose like a Valpolicella, a
wonderful taste that REFRESHED but also finishes DRY, but not tart.
A lot of the people at this party work in the wine business for other stores
and restaurants and they were floored that it was this good and less than
$20 on the shelf. Most of the under $20 Lambruscos have a tartness, like a
bitter cherry pit... but this one didn't.
FLOORED!
This is GREAT Summer-time Drinking wine...
Give it a try - it's a 6 pack case!
Serve it ICE-COLD... And If you like Dry Reds... You'll be amazed how fast
it disappears!

Our
New Zealand Discovery
"We at Pop’s all have our areas of expertise when it comes to wines. We all
joke around that if we were made of wine, Ted Clark would bleed German White
Wine and Michael Crafa would bleed Italian Red Wine. I am still a youngster
in this business so I have yet to choose my area of concentration, but now
that Summer is in full swing I would bleed nothing but Sauvignon Blanc. It
is my favorite Summer white wine! It is delicious and crisp and perfect for
the hot weather. One area in particular I am crazy about right now is New
Zealand.
I think the 2009 growing season was a breakthrough season for the
“Kiwis”; a breakthrough because before the 2009 season, I detested New
Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. It was too light and extremely dry. There were no
other flavor characteristics other than the essential mineral, grass, and
citrus. It might have been the weather in New Zealand that year, but the
wines have just been OUTSTANDING this year!
The Sandy Cove Sauvignon Blanc
has been a favorite of mine recently. I tried it as most people do; I liked
the label, so I bought it. It has a beautiful and artistic representation of
a Kiwi fruit within a Kiwi bird….VERY New Zealand! Sandy Cove is a Sauvignon
Blanc from Marlborough and was made in very limited production specifically
for a distributor here in New York by New Zealand winemaker Allan Scott
(former winemaker for Cloudy Bay!!!!). Not only do we carry it in our store,
but this little Sauvignon Blanc has made its appearance on many wine lists
throughout the tri-state area! This is a great way to enjoy the fruits of
Mr. Scott’s labor without paying the hefty Cloudy Bay price tag! A true New
Zealand value! Unlike most New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, this pretty gem has
a little more body and a round structure. It tickles the palate with just
the right amount of tartness and acidity, along with hints of the classic
grassiness that is eclectic New Zealand. I recommend this wine constantly in
our store for customers who enjoy a very nice, crisp Sauvignon Blanc. Try it
now before the Summer season is officially over!"

"So
I ask you this....."
"You fancy a wine with Bordeaux - like character or Californian Cab flare
that flavors and drinks $30 bucks, but cost $9?
Buy Patagonia!
You love Italian wines like I do, and seek character, diversity, taste, and
elegance?
Buy Patagonia.
Need a great place to visit and travel? Buy a Patagonian ticket? Not to long
ago, The New York Times noted Patagonia as the second among the 31 places to
explore in 2010, while today, Michael from Pop's, offers wine education and
experience before you go; BUY THIS WINE!!
First Swirl: A medium to dark ruby red core, surrounded by a cerise colored
rim and medium body and viscosity...
First Sniff: powerful and elegant flavors showcase cherry and blackberry
hints accompanied by floral notes on the nose. Luscious red-fruits tingle
the nose as the glass is slowly pulled away...
First Sip: It has a wonderful butterscotch taste and a slight spiciness
totally integrated with the subtle vanilla notes provided by the oak aging.
A full-bodied wine, this Malbec has ripe and voluptuous tannins in the
mid-palate with a long and very enjoyable finish....
The 2009 Picada 15 Malbec by Bodega NQN has educated me, and my love for
wine. Together, we should keep our enjoyment simple, but lively, and enjoy
this area for a long time to come. Now Malbec yourselves!!!"
